Eve’s journey back to health and independence

Eve Penny, 76

As we age, an exercise routine is crucial to maintaining quality of life. At 76 years of age, client Eve Penny came to Hive with the goal to “just keep moving.”

“Once I stopped working, I thought right, I have to do something to keep me going. But I needed a personal trainer. Gyms can’t cater to me. I go there and I don’t know what to do. I needed exercises tailored to me.”

Eve’s program at Hive Activ has been focused on mobility to ensure she can still enjoy independence and perform daily tasks.

“When I started at Hive, I couldn’t get up off a chair or pick anything up off the ground. Now I can squat down if I need to.”

“I have three cats so I need to pick up their bowls. And in my garden, I can squat down and pick up a weed. I can’t do the whole garden anymore, but I’ve got the garden beds that I do with veggies. Every morning I go out and get the green caterpillars off my broccoli.”

In the three years she has been with us, Eve has recovered from several major operations.

“I have had one knee, one shoulder and two hip replacements. And three lots of surgery on my lower back.”

“When I had my third back surgery, I had to use a walker. But I have resisted the urge to keep using it. I am back to using just my walking stick.”

When asked where she gets her impressive fighting spirit, Eve casually remarks, “well the alternative was a wheelchair, and I am not doing that.”

You are an inspiration to all of us, Eve!
